This course is designed to equip those with little or no experience in shipping goods with a thorough understanding of the entire process of moving goods internationally, strengths and weaknesses of transportation types, legal and bureaucratic understanding of ports and shipping and the regulatory bodies that manage the entire industry.

      Unit 1: International Trade and Freight (5 credits)

      Module 1: Understanding trade and freight

      Module 2: Identifying goods to be traded

      Module 3: Obtaining the information on goods being traded

      Module 4: Identifying, selecting and recommending suitable modes of transporting goods

      Module 5: Identifying instructions for goods to be transported

      Module 6: Identifying problems that can occur in international trade

      Unit 2: Ports and Shipping (2 credits)

      Module 1: Function of ports and shipping

      Module 2: Understanding the role of ports and shipping

      Module 3: Policies and procedures that affect ports and shipping

      Module 4: How to monitor ports and shipping

      Unit 3: Movement of Goods (5 credits)

      Module 1: Characteristics of goods and the impact on the handling process

      Module 2: Concepts of route planning and scheduling for the movement of goods

      Module 3: Characteristics of modes of transport

      Module 4: Understanding the role of collection, storage and distribution

      Module 5: Regulatory and enforcement bodies for movement of goods within own country

      Unit 4: Supply Chain (5 credits)

      Module 1: Supply chains across a range of sectors

      Module 2: Roles of other organisations in supply chains

      Module 3: Communication and information sources within a supply chain


      This course has no exams, instead there will be a number of tutor marked assessments (TMAs) to ensure that you have a thorough understanding of the course materials, with the tutor sending comments to guide you through any areas of potential difficulty, as well as a range of self-assessments that are indicators that you understand the materials as you work through them.
