    • Environmental studies course overview

      A Level Environmental Studies covers key areas like the living environment, the physical environment, energy resources, biological resources, sustainability and environmental pollution. You will also gain an understanding of the scientific processes used to assess the subject and an appreciation for how this fits into the wider scientific context.

      Upon successful completion of the exam and practical assessments (as administered by AQA), you will have achieved an internationally recognised AQA A Level Environmental Studies.

      AS Level

      Unit 1: ENVS 1 The living environment

      Written examination: 1 hour

      Unit 2: ENVS 2 The physical environment

      Written examination: 1 hour 30 minutes

      A2 Level

      Unit 3: ENVS 3 Energy resources and environmental pollution

      Written examination: 1 hour 30 minutes

      Unit 4: ENVS 4 Biological resources and sustainability

      Written examination: 1 hour 30 minutes

      Unit 1: The living environment

      Module 1: Biodiversity on planet earth

      Unit 2: The physical environment

      Module 1: Physical resources like gases, water and mineral nutrients

      Module 2: The exploitation and management of physical resources

      Module 3: Unsustainability

      Unit 3: Energy resources and environmental pollution

      Module 1: Future problems of energy supply

      Module 2: The study of energy resources

      Unit 4: Biological resources and sustainability

      Module 1: Population growth versus the demands placed on the planet and life support systems

      How Science Works

      How Science Works is an additional subject studied in A Level Environmental Studies. It is a set of concepts that will help you understand how scientists investigate scientific phenomena and how they use this to explain the world around us. It will also give you an idea about how concepts are formed how these are tested and then validated.

      The AQA A Level Environmental Studies qualification is gained once all 4 exam papers are successfully completed as well as your course work. The two exams make up the AS Level, the next two exams comprise the A2 Level and together they form the A Level. These exams are administered by the AQA and assessment centre details will be included with your course, as well as practice papers so that you are more than prepared for your assessments. You will need to contact your local examination centre to work through your coursework requirements.

      In addition, there will be a number of tutor marked assessments (TMAs) to ensure that you have a thorough understanding of the course materials, with the tutor sending comments to guide you through any areas of potential difficulty, as well as a range of self-assessments that are indicators that you understand the materials as you work through them. These are for your own information, and do not need to be shown to your course tutor.
